WASTE VALORIZATION - Agro-industrial residues as nutrient source for sustainable microalgae cultivation

29-06-2023

The population growth directly impacts the livestock, which increase the demand for pro-tein source to produce animal food besides human food. Up today soy is the main source of protein in our global food supply. However, the deviation of the soy production to pro-duce animal food can result in an unsustainable production and consumption, which high-light the importance to brings up the production of animal food using protein from micro-algae. The final price of the microalgae is highly dependent on the cost of the nutrient used in the microalgae cultivation.

One way to make the microalgae cultivation economically sustainable is using agriculture waste as nutrient source.

The viability of the waste generated by wine production, tomato sauce production and waste powder coffee were evaluated to be used as nutrient source to cultivate microalgae aiming the production of biomass to be used in animal feed.

An article written by me and my research team was approved at the WASTES conference 2023 and will be published as a chapter in a book. Once published I will put the link in that section.
